An extension to the existing sports centre at Caterham School was included within the masterplan prepared by Miller Bourne, and was the first major project of the masterplan to be developed.
The extension, which includes extensive improvements to some of the existing sports centre, has more than doubled the number of changing rooms, the gym has tripled in size and new offices and sports classroom were also created. Additionally, the extension contains a café and a new viewing platform, overlooking the adjacent all-weather pitch, that extends the length of the entire sports centre.
The extension sits slightly below the roofline of the existing with a form that is broken into front and rear elements and external cladding to the upper floors, that contrasts with the existing. This approach helps highlight the entrance, the more personal scale of the interior arrangement and breaks up what would otherwise appear a long extruded building form.
