MMC

At Miller Bourne, we understand the benefits that Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) can provide you

The sustainable benefits of MMC

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) can provide you with a creative, robust and flexible alternative to traditional construction methods to deal with the high-performance requirements of modern buildings.

We’ve been designing buildings using MMC for many years, predominantly using the STREIF enclosed panel system.

This forms the building using factory-fabricated wall, roof and floor cassettes. Having used these systems for school buildings, housing and boarding accommodation totalling over 15,000m², we know the systems well.

MMC offers real benefits in achieving the high levels of thermal efficiency and airtightness required of modern building. It also reduces carbon capture in the timber structure and means less wastage of materials, better quality control and Health & Safety and reduced impact on site, thanks to the speed of erection.

To use these systems most effectively and economically, the building should ideally be designed from an early stage to best utilise the system components.

MMC allows us to create the structures in a more efficient and sustainable way, with all components, from insulation to surface finishes, applied in factory-controlled conditions.

The sustainable benefits of the fabric first approach v3

The advantages of MMC

  • Good quality and predictability:  the components are made off-site in a factory-controlled environment
  • Faster build speed and efficiency: the modules are delivered to site with windows and doors built in so MMC projects can deliver considerable time savings compared to traditional construction
  • Improved Health & Safety: less trades are required on site and continuity of the construction process is improved
  • Less disruption: shorter construction time and dramatically reduced traffic to site minimises vehicle movements so less pollution and noise
  • More sustainable: MMC can significantly reduce the embodied carbon of a building and its use has a direct impact on the overall carbon content of a project, both in construction and in use.
  • Better building performance and less risk of defects: the quality of the finished product can be controlled at source
  • "We’ve worked with Miller Bourne on a mix of MMC projects, including STREIF and TTFC. Both are very different from a designer perspective. Having worked with both types: the fully enclosed MMC type and the less enclosed TTFC, Miller Bourne are now very proficient at understanding the level of further detail that's required depending on whatever type of MMC is specified. They’ve shown us how having an MMC component doesn’t diminish the architectural role because they are so proficient and creative when it comes to finishing up and customising the design around it.”
